3/12/2008 Partial Closure of Lenzie Academy

On Wednesday 3rd of December Lenzie woke up again to yet another sprinkling of snow and overnight temperatures of below -4C. Clearly the combined prayers of a 1000 pupils for a “day off” to play in the snow was heard up above because the heating system at Lenzie Academy chose this day to shut down prior to the start of the school day.

Heating engineers were called, but despite their best efforts, the heating stubbornly refused to work and so the Academy staff had little option but to close the school for S1/2/3 pupils. However, staff were able to utilise temporary heaters to enable S4 pupils to take preliminary examinations and continue teaching S5/6 pupils.

Although the school was “confident that heating problems could be resolved to allow the school to open on Thursday, the Academy website reported on Wednesday night that:

“Unfortunately, problems with our heating system continue, following a shut down of the system this morning. Heating engineers have been unable to rectify this problem, and consequently Lenzie Academy will be closed to all pupils in S1/2/3 tomorrow (Thursday 4 December 2008). Through the use of temporary heaters, we will manage to operate the S4 Preliminary Examinations, and S4 pupils will therefore report to the school at times stated for particular examinations. Again through temporary heaters, we can continue the teaching of S5/6 in our wing. Hopefully, the school will open for all pupils as usual at 8.55 am on Friday 5 December, 2008 – should this not be the case, then information will be available through local radio stations and East Dunbartonshire Council’s website www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Yours sincerely
R J McLelland
Head Teacher”
