Lenzie Winners of Faraday Engineering Challenge

Pupils from Lenzie Academy were celebrating last Thursday (5 March) as they won the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Faraday Engineering Challenge Final at the Big Bang fair in London.

The school received a trophy, places on a three day Smallpeice Trust course plus £1000 towards science, design and technology, and maths equipment.

Each team had to use their knowledge and understanding of science, design and technology and maths to respond to the challenge and produce a table tennis server. They were assessed both on the quality and accuracy of their product and on a final presentation illustrating learning outcomes.

Aaron from Lenzie Academy was in complete shock. He said, “I didn’t expect our team to win. I can’t tell how I feel about winning.”

Jan Stapleton from the IET said, “These teams were amazing; their responses to a difficult challenge illustrated excellent skills and sound understanding of scientific principles. This initiative demonstrated that learning in an applied context can produce wonderful results. Congratulations to the winners and to all the schools who took part in the Challenge Days - well done!”

The final was the culmination of 30 IET Faraday Challenge Days involving 180 schools, which were organised by the IET
which celebrates 100 years at its London home, Savoy Place, in June 2009 and will be staging a programme of centenary celebrations. The IET dates from 1871 and has 150,000 members in 127 countries. It licenses the ICTTech, EngTech, IEng and CEng, suffixs.
