Sixteen people have been caught in a clampdown on dog fouling and litter by East Dunbartonshire Council. The blitz took place at various times of the day in lanes, parks and town centres such as Kirkintilloch.

Dog owners who refused to clear up after their pets were handed £40 fixed penalty fines rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days and people caught dropping litter received £50. A further four people were given warnings.

In April 2008 East Dunbartonshire's 12 Community support officers were given powers to issues fines for litter and dog offences. Rhondda Geekie supported the action saying: "I am continually being approached by people asking why those who drop litter and don't tidy up after themselves can't be fined. ... This is a positive step and I'm sure it will be welcomed by residents across East Dunbartonshire."

Councillor Amanda Stewart, convener of the Connect Services Committee, said: "The majority of residents take pride in the area however, local people tell us their surroundings are blighted by the antisocial behaviour of those who drop litter and those who allow their dogs to mess on streets and in open spaces."

Michelle Nisbet, community support officer in the council's community safety unit said though some dog owners are responsible, "the age old message of clean up behind you' seems at times not to be getting home to some people."

In August 2008 five dog owners and two litter louts were finedand six warning letters were issued to under 16s during the council's recent Litter Day of Action.
