ANTONINE WALL WALK for ALL

Strathkelvin Ramblers - Wednesday 13th June 2007

Don't miss this unique and fairly easy countryside walk! It ranges over the best-preserved part of the old Roman wall and is part of East Dunbartonshire's "G66+ LIVE" festival. It will be led by Jim Lawson (Convener of Strathkelvin Ramblers). The Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) Consultant, David Shenton (Convener of Loch Ardinning SWT Reserve) will indicate points of natural interest throughout – plants, flowers, trees, birds, mammals. insects etc.. Bring your binoculars: deer and birds of prey are to be found in this region.

The walk will start at Auchinstarry car park at 9.15 am with return there between 3.30pm and 4.00pm. It will first head south towards Croy and then west to the Roman forts and Bar Hill by Twechar. Finally it will veer north over Dumbreck Nature Reserve and return SE to the start. Total distance is about 7.5 miles and maximum height approximately 100 metres. Walkers are advised to wear walking boots and to carry waterproofs, packed lunch and drink. Strathkelvin Ramblers can accept no liability. Those under 16 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Strathkelvin Ramblers have a policy of no dogs on walks.

Shared–car transport will leave Kirkintilloch (Sainsbury's Car Park - near entrance on the right) at 9.00am, with a small contribution to the driver. Be there at 8.50am.

What you will gain

Apart from points of natural and historical interest, you will be made fully aware of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and what it is about. You will see the attractive remains of the Wall and learn about interesting countryside "on your doorstep". A main aim is to learn to enjoy the countryside responsibly. Maybe you will join the Ramblers Association: a way to keep fit and make friends! You will be given a leaflet on the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and other relevant information sheets and application forms. Leaflets will be provided, showing the route on a map. You will also learn about the work of The Scottish Wildlife Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage. A short questionnaire will provide feedback to the organisers and Scottish Natural Heritage to help in meeting your needs in the future.

The "G66+ Live" Committee thanks:

"If you need to bring a dog, it must under proper control, and you will be given advice on what proper control means in everyday situations".
