Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust

Listed as a building of special architectural or historic interest Kirkintilloch Town Hall was paid for mainly by public subscription. It was opened in 1906 and closed by East Dunbartonshire Council in June 2004. This despite a petition of over 2000 collected by the late Cathie Haugh and friends and presented to the Council & John Lyons MP calling for the Hall to be kept in public use.

The Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust is a Registered Charity established to preserve the hall and restore it for community use. The Trust has over 25 members including some in Canada, the USA and South Africa who pay either £1 or £2 (£4 for a family) and receive regular newsletters giving up to date information and reports of progress.

The Trust's original Options Appraisal was funded by Architectural Heritage to whom we are most grateful. We are indebted to our architect Sue Thornley planer John Black of CEIS who prepared the Business Plan, also the Students from Calidonian University, the Computer Corner who got the Web site up and running, the Antiquarians for their on the History of the Hall and last but not least to the Kirkintilloch Herald for their continuing support. We are also grateful for the entertainers who performed at our two fund-raising events Pat Friel and Graham Grass (whose CD Town hall song will be on sale soon).

For the future both Architectural Heritage and the Big Lottery Fund are cosidering funding for the next stage of their process. We also hope to get help from Historic Scotland and Channel Three's "Million Pound Give Away" which is auditioning soon.

At a local level Kirkintilloch Players have promised to donate to the Trust the income from their next production in May and the Ladies and the Male Voice Choirs the same from their concert in October.

On 28th April at 11am in the Auld Kirk Museum the Antiquarians Society will launch a book on the history of the Town Hall. The event is open to all.

Our fund-raising sub-committee is on the look out for new members to help in the campaign Buy a Brick for the Hall at the cost of £10. A nice way to have a loved one remembered.

Meanwhile anyone with Development or Management experience is urgently needed with the Trust. If you can assist please phone: Dr Geoffrey W. Allan 0141-776-1145 or Pam McGaughrin 0141-578-3708
